Set Learning Level for your students

Matific’s adaptive algorithm is optimised to help students complete all material for a grade, called their learning level, as they play on Adventure Island. By default a student’s learning level is equal to the grade of their class, however:

- Students who perform poorly on the placement test may have their learning level set below their class grade, and
- Students who complete all material for a grade will have their learning level advanced to the next grade

Now we are giving visibility and control over the learning level to teachers.

In a nutshell, this allows teachers to adjust the grade of Adventure Island episodes on a per-student basis, without impacting the adaptive algorithm overall.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I see the learning level of the students in my class?
A: You can view it from Class Management → Manage My Students

Q: How do I change the learning level of a student?
A: In the student row menu, select “edit student details”. There is a tab that will allow you to change a student’s learning level.

Q: How do I change learning level for more than one student at a time?
A: You can edit learning levels in bulk by using the checkbox-select in the top left hand corner of the table:

This is also a great way to bulk edit the Weekly Quest!

Q: What happens if I change the learning level of a student before they take the placement test, or after I reset the placement test?
A: The placement test will always test students on prerequisite material from the two grades before the learning level. The learning level is read when the student launches the test.

Q: I teach a grade 4 class, but I suspect one of my students is performing at a grade 2 level. What do you recommend I do to best optimise their experience?
A: We recommend setting the learning level of the student to be one grade above where you think they might be, then administer the placement test. So set their learning level to be grade 3, and the placement test will draw questions from grades 1 and 2. Once they finish the test,

Matific will automatically update the student’s learning level based on their results.

Q: I set the learning level for a student to grade 2, but they are still getting activities for grade 1. What is happening?
A: The learning level for a student is the “overall goal”, but the adaptive algorithm will draw from prior grades to address detected knowledge gaps. Once that gap has been filled, the algorithm will return to the learning level.

Q: What will be a student’s learning level if they are rolled over?
A: The learning level of a student is set to the class grade on rollover. Teachers may then reset the placement test, or adjust the learning level, for individual students or their whole class.

Q: I changed the learning level of the student, but the episode they're being recommended didn't change. What’s happening?
A: When a student finishes an activity on Adventure Island, their next activity recommendation is automatically calculated and placed on the student map. Any changes to learning level will only affect future recommendations. Ask your student to open the activity (they can finish it, or quit it) so that a new recommendation can be calculated with the updated learning level.

Q: If I change the grade of a class, will the learning level automatically update?
A: No, changing the grade of a class will not affect learning level.
